Thuluth Immersion: A Dive
into the Noble Script
Time: Saturdays at 12 noon ET (Online Zoom)
Open to new and continuing students
This is a weekly, ongoing class for students who wish to study Islamic calligraphy in the classical method. In this method students work at their own pace, copying the curriculum of a great calligrapher Shevki Efendi, a 19th-century Ottoman master.
The classical Ottoman school of calligraphy follows the spirit of the Islamic tradition of study. Simply put, the student studies directly with their teacher at their own pace. When the student has fully understood the curriculum they receive the Icaza (Icazet in Turkish) which signifies that the student can teach the next generation of students.
Students copy a given lesson on their own, email it in, and then we look at the homework of all the students during class. In this way, there is an opportunity to learn at all levels. Beginners learn from advanced students, advanced students learn from beginners. Every piece of calligraphy can be examined and improved upon and every piece of writing has beauty within it.
Classes can be taken individually or monthly with few exceptions when we take a Sunday off for holidays, etc.
Materials: Bamboo/Reed Pen, Non-waterproof black ink/inkwell with lika and Glossy Paper. Please contact the instructor with any questions regarding supplies at nycalligrapher@gmail.com
Cost: $50/month or $15 drop-in attendance
